The first feature documentary about Baby Food aiming to answer the question,

“why is feeding our kids so hard?!”

Navigating the complexities of feeding our children is undeniably challenging, isn't it? From the constant worry about choking hazards to keeping track of weight gain charts, managing allergies, and dealing with picky eating habits—it can feel like an overwhelming task.

Hi, I'm Paulina. I'm a filmmaker, a food enthusiast, but above all, I'm a mom.

I vividly recall the excitement and anticipation I felt when my first son was about to embark on his journey into solid foods. I was eager to introduce him to a world brimming with delicious flavors. Initially, I planned to start with the traditional method of pureeing sweet potatoes and carrots. However, my perspective shifted when I was introduced to the concept of "baby-led weaning"—an approach that empowers the child to take control of their feeding journey.

No more playing "here comes the airplane" or coercing spoonfuls of pureed food into baby’s mouth. Contrary to popular belief, such practices could potentially contribute to developing a strained relationship with food and even foster picky eating habits— something every parent dreads. Determined to ensure my son developed a healthy relationship with food, I delved into exploring alternative approaches.

As I discussed my concerns and aspirations with other parents, I was struck by the prevalent anxiety, uncertainty, and feelings of defeat surrounding the topic of feeding children. The lack of clarity and inconsistent approaches towards infant feeding left me puzzled.

By delving into the early developments of child nutrition and their impact on modern feeding practices, my documentary aims to shed light on how historical perspectives on child feeding practices, as explored by experts like Amy Bentley, author of "The Invention of Baby Food," continue to influence contemporary feeding habits and the challenges faced by parents today.

Through this documentary, I am taking you on a journey through my second son’s first bites seeking to provoke thoughtful reflection and dialogue on how we can navigate the complexities of nourishing our children in a way that promotes healthy relationships with food and fosters lifelong well-being.

Budget

The estimated budget required to produce A Solid 6 Months is $200,000. This budget is kept modest by utilizing the director's personal camera equipment to film footage of her family at home, and handling all editing internally. This approach ensures an efficient and continuous post-production process, crucial for documentary filmmaking, where the story often evolves during editing.

The primary expenses within this budget will be incurred by covering the travel expenses of a small crew to essential locations such as baby food manufacturing companies, expert sites (if the experts cannot travel), and other families' homes as well as the marketing expenses for the film. Additionally, we will apply for relevant grants to garner additional financial support for the film.

Please Support "A Solid 6 Months" with a Tax-Deductible Donation!
